Why RDI (Relationship Development Intervention) ?
When considering various therapies for Autism, it is essential to understand that Autism is not merely a collection of behaviors to be managed. Instead, it is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts a child’s ability to naturally connect and relate to others.
In typically developing children, the ability to relate and connect with others begins early in infancy, forming the foundation of the most critical relationship in a child’s life—the Parent-Child Guiding Relationship.
When a child struggles to be guided, they miss key developmental milestones, which can affect their ability to think flexibly, interact, socialize, and relate to others.
RDI® (Relationship Development Intervention) focuses on rebuilding the guiding relationship between parents and their child. Through detailed assessments, goal-setting, and helping parents create meaningful, everyday opportunities for connection, RDI works to change how the child interacts, thinks, relates, and communicates.
Founded in the early 2000s in the USA by renowned clinical psychologists Dr. Steven Gutstein and Dr. Rachelle Sheely, RDI draws on the latest research in autism, child development, psychology, and neurology.

RDI stands out for several reasons
Customization – Unlike standardized programs, RDI tailors its approach to each unique family and individual affected. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach here, ensuring that every intervention is personalized.
Internal Motivation – Rather than relying on external incentives, RDI nurtures a natural desire within the individual to engage and collaborate with others. It focuses on fostering genuine internal motivation.
Focus on Thinking – Emphasizing thinking as a primary tool for brain development, RDI encourages new ways of thinking. This approach reshapes the brain, promoting better cognitive functioning.
Integration into Daily Life – Rather than isolating therapy sessions, RDI seamlessly integrates personalized interventions into everyday activities. It prioritizes the process and connection over merely achieving results or skills.
Empowering Parents – The parent supervision aspect of RDI is a standout feature. By empowering parents through training and involving them in their child’s development, RDI instills remarkable confidence and a sense of empowerment in parents.
Ultimately, RDI’s strength lies in its adaptability, emphasis on intrinsic motivation, cognitive development focus, integration into daily life, and the profound empowerment it offers to parents.
