Things to Remember while setting up House Rules or Charts
Navigating daily routines and fostering positive behaviors can pose unique challenges for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In such cases, implementing structured strategies like charts and house rules can offer invaluable support. By providing clear visual cues and consistent expectations, these tools help individuals with ASD better understand and navigate their environments, leading to increased independence and confidence.
Things to Remember
- Charts can be for anything from morning brush to yoga time, from TV time to outdoor play time—anything you want to streamline or control.
- It’s important for the child to manage the chart and mark it, so they feel responsible.
- Ensure equality—charts and house rules are not punishments, so they should apply to both parents and children (may not use much, but equality is key).
- Consider the age—this method usually works better with children aged 7 and above.
- Consistency is key—follow the plan consistently for a month and you’ll see amazing results.
- They can be used to manage behaviors, but remember it’s not ABA, so be gentle and loving when addressing random behaviors.
- House rules or social rules are not made by the mother alone—why should you become the devil? They are set up by the family or by a higher authority. When referring to them, the tone should be, “Oh, it’s the house rules that cancel your phone time today.”
